Summer camps, daycare centers, after-school programs, and even weekend retreats offer children the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Camps can provide children with wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. Daycares allow for structure and strong friendships to be created. And after-school programs foster creativity in children and help them develop intellectually.
Unfortunately, these environments can also pose a real danger to children. Unsafe play areas, lack of supervision, and physical or sexual assaults all occur at summer camps and daycares. We have experience representing children who have suffered physical injuries from another person’s carelessness, as well as emotional injuries due to sexual assault. If your child has been injured at a camp, daycare, or similar environment, please give us a call at 713-864-4000.
Camp and Daycare Injuries
Every day, numerous children are injured while attending daycare and after-school programs. And every summer, countless children are injured at camps, retreats, and summer-league sports events. These injuries are often the result of negligent supervision from adults or unsafe playground equipment. Every year in the U.S., over 200,000 children are treated in emergency departments for playground injuries. Roughly 45% of these injuries are considered “severe” by the Centers for Disease Control.
Summer camps also expose children to potential dangers. The introduction of things like water-sports, hiking, rock-climbing, and campfires increase the risk of injury or death to your child. The camp generally has a duty to keep your children reasonably safe from accidents. Whether the camp has lived up to that duty is something we need to look at if your child has been injured or has passed away as a result of a camp-related incident.
Recently, camps have also experienced problems with sexual abuse. In line with the duty to keep the campers safe, camps should conduct background checks on all counselors, and monitor their interaction with the campers. We have experience representing children who have been sexually abused by those in authority positions.
